Marketing, Metal and Jesus

21 Aug

In today’s large, growing music industry, we sometimes have the tendency to market off a certain genre or artist based on our likes or its message. In this case, take metal and hardcore for example. Many people see it as violent, loud, noise, etc. Why is this though? Because people don’t give it a chance or can’t make out the lyrics? Well, this shouldn’t be the case.

Take metalcore bands like Mychildren Mybride and Haste The Day for example. Both contain strong Christ-centered lyrics about living for Him. Take a look at their names. Haste The Day‘s name comes from the hymn “It Is Well With My Soul.” Both bands have new albums releasing this June and will also in fact be touring with each other through the end of next month. You may want to check these guys out, as well as many of the other acts on their label, Solid State Records.

Another Christian label that showcases the metal/hardcore genre is Facedown Records. Contained on their roster are some unashamed hardcore Christians with a message to go out into the world, such as For Today and Sleeping Giant. To check out some of these mentioned bands, plus many more, you can download Facedown’s free spring sampler here.

Described as “heavy worship” are hardcore band I Am Alpha and Omega. They are signed to a very special missionary label, named Come and Live! Records. Their EP is up on C&L!’s site for free download, along with other hardcore bands Fallstar and Holding Onto Hope.

These are only a few examples of some of the positive Christian metal and hardcore bands out there, all of which are very good quality bands. This genre is generally marketed as having darker themes, but with these bands, a light brighter than many of today’s modern acts of any kind shows through. I hope that you will check out many of these bands and ministries, which are all for Jesus.

These bands, among many others, have really gone out into the world to spread the love of Jesus through a genre of music that reaches out to a darker audience that may never hear about the Creator at the many shows they go to in their lives. These bands have a sense to them that is not unlike what a missionary would do.  As mentioned, many people may look down on these bands and ask, “why tour with secular bands in such bad venues?” or question the style of music, which again is not the most accessible genre. These bands are also certainly put into a hard spot, as the scene that they’re in offers many temptations and paths that lead astray, but staying true to God in spots that they may get in will always get them through.

” I am in the midst of lions; I lie among ravenous beasts— men whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues are sharp swords. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. They spread a net for my feet – I was bowed down in distress. They dug a pit in my path— but they have fallen into it themselves. My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music.” – Psalm 57:4-7
